Do you have an open bite, clicking jaw, or a persisting head or neck pain of unknown origin? Myofunctional trainers might be the right choice for you.
Many adults with bite problems do not realize that their problems are caused by bad myofunctional habits carried on from childhood. Tongue thrusts, for example, can cause the front teeth to open, creating an open bite.
TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders can also cause problems for adults. If you suffer from a clicking jaw, frequent head or neck pain, jaw pain or you grind your teeth, then you may have a TMJ problem. These can be successfully resolved with adult myofunctional trainers.
Myofunctional trainers work by aligning the teeth and correcting bad oral habits that are the real causes of crooked teeth and poor jaw growth. This appliance can straighten your teeth without the need for complex treatment with fixed braces.
Research shows that after all permanent teeth have erupted and the jaws have reached their final size, the bone around the teeth gets harder. This means that orthodontic work on adult patients’ teeth can make them more prone to damage from fixed appliances. In traditional adult orthodontry all of these factors can contribute to less stable results on the long haul. Also, if bad oral habits have not been corrected, it is more likely that you will need to wear long-term or permanent retainers.
Myofunctional trainers are used as a sole treatment in some cases, but in more complex cases it might also be followed by a treatment with fixed braces. Your orthodontist will advise if you are a candidate for trainers, and if additional treatment is necessary.
